.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Temperature continues to swing with an unsettled weather
pattern over the next week.
- A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for tonight and
Saturday for most of NE Montana.
- Another weak system moves through Saturday night bringing less
than a couple inches of snow. The next system with snow
accumulation arrives Tuesday night and Wednesday, but minor
accumulations (less than 2 inches) are expected.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
A backdoor cold front was dropping south through the CWA this
afternoon bringing a slight drop in temperatures to most
locations. Colder air will continue to flow into the area tonight
with lows from near zero in Plentywood to the mid teens south of
Fort Peck Lake.
Light snow was falling across the northeast zones this afternoon,
along and north of a line from Opheim to Culbertson. But a larger
moisture stream will push in later tonight and affect most of the
CWA. By Saturday afternoon, most areas are looking at 2 to 4
inches with this system with lesser amounts in the NE corner of
the state and over Petroleum County. A Winter Weather Advisory is
in effect for tonight into Saturday morning for all zones except
for Sheridan and Eastern Roosevelt.
Another wave of light snow is expected to move through on Saturday
night into Sunday as another shortwave trough passes through the
region. Temperatures will continue to fluctuate next week as
arctic air and warmer intermountain air push back and forth. The
warmest day looks to be Tuesday where highs in the 30s and 40s can
be expected. A cold front will drop south Tuesday night with light
snow moving in by Wednesday.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Increased PoP manually at times tonight and Saturday morning to
provide a more consistent forecast and better match neighboring
offices.
There is high confidence of accumulating snow occurring tonight
and Saturday with at least 2 inches in most areas. Lower
confidence in snow amounts NE of Opheim, Poplar and Culbertson.
There is moderate confidence in temperatures following closely
to the NBM during the entire forecast period. TFJ
